FAQs

You may have general questions about counselling or what it will be like to work with me.

What can I expect from my first session?

In the first session, I will go over your rights and responsibilities in counselling so that you can be informed of the risks and benefits of engaging in counselling. After that, we will take some time to get to know one another, explore what brought you to counselling, discuss the issues you hope to address in therapy, and work to create a customized support plan. Therapy should be purposeful and practical, and I strive to optimize our time together by focusing on issues that are important to you.

What if I am struggling but unsure of what I need help with?

Understanding the issues, collaboratively exploring and setting goals, and recognizing available resources are often part of the counselling process.

Do I have to tell anyone that I am in counselling?

Sessions are strictly confidential; however, there are limits to confidentiality in place to protect minors and adults where risk of serious harm to yourself or others may be of concern, or where legal court orders are required. Specific concerns can be discussed in the first session.

Do you have a faith background related to your approach?

For some clients, their faith is a significant resource in their life. I am comfortable with exploring spiritual issues and perspectives in therapy if clients request; however, I am trained in, and counsel from a clinical rather than spiritual model. I greatly celebrate client diversity and I work hard to create a safe and inclusive space for all clients.

How long will each session last?

Sessions are typically 60 minutes in length which includes admin time (e.g., payment, next appointment booking). Longer sessions may be arranged in 10 minute segments.

How many many sessions will I need?

While many clients can experience appreciable improvement in 6 to 8 sessions, the process and duration of therapy is unique to each person and can vary depending on a number of factors. The nature of the concern, complexity of issues, and clients’ pacing and preferences can impact the duration of therapy.

Do you offer a sliding scale fee structure?

If finances are a concern, please reach out to inquire if I am presently able to offer a reduced rate.

How does payment work?

A credit card is held on file to confirm your your appointment at the time of first booking; however, payment will not be collected until the time of your appointment. I accept credit card, debit card, or e-transfer payments and a receipt will be sent by email.

Can I receive reimbursement for counselling fees through my insurance or employee benefits?

Services provided by registered psychologists are covered by many health insurances or extended health benefit plans. I would recommend discussing with your insurance provider or reviewing the details outlined in your insurance policy plan to confirm eligibility for reimbursements. I can also direct bill to some insurance providers.

Can I work with you remotely if I am travelling or live out of province?

My license only allows me to provide therapeutic services to clients within the province of Alberta.

How will I know if you are the right counsellor for me?

It is important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor and be able to discuss personal information. A strong therapeutic relationship and sense of rapport are critical to therapy. While I often adapt my methods to meet the needs of clients, there are times that my approach may not be the right fit. I often check in with my clients to see if any adjustments are needed in our work together as I want our time together to be beneficial. If this does not work, I would be happy to refer you to other resources or a different counsellor upon your request.
