Adolescents face many challenges as they navigate the journey from childhood to adulthood. They may grapple with questions of self-identity, who they are, and their place in the world. They can face increasing academic and social pressures, which can contribute to anxiety. Immigrant youth may face unique challenges related to cultural adjustments (including language barriers, differing social norms, adjusting to new educational systems, racism, and social isolation). Teens may also stress about making plans for their future education, careers, and personal development. Family issues such as divorce, domestic violence, or losing a loved one can also impact psychological wellbeing. Furthermore, bullying, cyber bullying, relationship challenges, curiosity about alcohol and substances, and body image issues can concern youths. All of these factors can contribute to mounting pressures and can add complexities to the lives of youth.

Adolescence can also be a period of positive growth. During this period youth and teens may also discover their personal values, interests, and goals.  Developmental improvements in a variety of mental and physical abilities can lend itself to a very fruitful period of learning and self-expression as many youths find neat ways to exercise their creativity and curiosity. For example, Adolescents may be increasingly motivated towards healthy academic, athletic, and artistic pursuits. Moreover, deep and meaningful friendships may be forged, and some youth may also grow more socially aware, empathetic, and engaged in social issues they are passionate about. There are many positives that can also come from this period of development!

The Chinese word for crisis is “Wei Ji” 危机.“Wei” means crisis while “Ji” means opportunity. In Chinese philosophy, opportunity can arise from a crisis. As adolescents learn to navigate and overcome some difficult obstacles, they also come to develop resilience and coping skills that can serve them well into the future. It is a great time to form positive relationships, improve communication skills, and build self-esteem.
